Artist Statement: You are your art, it comes from you- from your experiences, your mind, your heart– this is an idea that profoundly effects me. My art reflects the pull towards freedom, what I want to inspire in others and cultivate in myself. Freedom is captured in my process, in working fast and with whatever I have on hand, to subject matter, of collaging philosophies, religions, and institutions that explore the idea of self liberation to me. Some of my work simply reflects on what a soul is and the vastness of our internal selves, what’s hidden in a face and what exists in between the inside and outside Life is messy and multi-faceted, so is my art– but I try to move through it as gracefully as I can.
Janelle Carter compares her life and dedication to art as a journey, all leading toward the aim of exploring freedom in process and subject matter. In seeing art as a transformational tool, she hopes to inspire the freedom to create in others. She cultivates liberation for herself by exploring her imperfect process and relishing the explosive end result. Being from San Diego, she returned after studying art at UCSB and the Tasmania School of Art in Australia. Searching for the underground art scene in Southern California led her to curate multiple shows between 2003 -2005 with a crew of renegade female artists called GRRRRL power. Currently she shows at select exhibitions and focuses on illustrating T-shirt graphics for local design company Mad Engine, Urban Outfitters, Lost surf apparel, SubUrban Riot, and many more. Mentoring teen artists at local art center A.R.T.S, A Reason to Survive constantly reminds her of the healing and transformational power of art.
