Artist Statement: Light and sound have a couple common characteristics. One characteristic being that they can both be measured in wave lengths. And one of the main characteristics is the effect they have on our senses. Not only as a whole, but what I think is the most interesting part of it, is how it affects people individually.

Intonation, generally referring to sound pitch or inflection in someone’s voice, I felt could be translated into an altogether different stimulus to our senses. Our sight. And looking at these pieces, I am hoping that an individual will think about how each grouping of images and colors makes them feel or which one they are more drawn to.

I want these pieces to evoke the senses. I do not want them to just be seen. I want them to also be imagined as a sound, smell or a taste. I want one piece to be more comfortable to look at than another or more pleasing to your senses. I created each piece with the idea in mind that each one projected its own unique intonation, and formed some sort of parallel wave between sight and sound.

Artist Statement: We all have secrets …

Surreptitious
Make me think I don’t know me
the way I pass through the days
into night
where it grows
the silence not really quite
the missing time not really lost
I am ruined
living in both worlds
without intonation
a bold infraction taking place
a shadow now of the former me
behind a screen
with each nefarious performance
if you could see the way I act
shameless
without contrition
I am half awake in your world
deliberate misdirection
but this is my shelter
my secret garden.

Surreptitious - 8"x8" Photograph on Paper & Canvas - $100

Disappearance - 5"x5" Photograph on Paper & Canvas - $75

Hidden - 5"x5" Photograph on Paper & Canvas - $75

Undisclosed - 5"x5" Photograph on Paper & Canvas - $75

Insidious
Sinking low
I hit a wall
unsympathetic
if I could replace the time with truth
it wouldn’t change a thing
deception
accused
no longer the shining star
no longer lying between what is avowed
splintered as I am
such a waste of your heart
this is going to be
wanton to defend
not by pride
without intonation
complacency makes it easier
I walk away from you
disengaged from the former me
the shelter burned to the ground
my garden exposed.

Insidious - 5"x5" Photograph on Paper & Canvas - $75

Secret Garden - 8"x8" Photograph on Paper & Canvas - $100

Subtle Fortress - 5"x5" Photograph on Paper & Canvas - $75

Artist Statement: You are your art, it comes from you- from your experiences, your mind, your heart– this is an idea that profoundly effects me. My art reflects the pull towards freedom, what I want to inspire in others and cultivate in myself. Freedom is captured in my process, in working fast and with whatever I have on hand, to subject matter, of collaging philosophies, religions, and institutions that explore the idea of self liberation to me. Some of my work simply reflects on what a soul is and the vastness of our internal selves, what’s hidden in a face and what exists in between the inside and outside Life is messy and multi-faceted, so is my art– but I try to move through it as gracefully as I can.
Janelle Carter compares her life and dedication to art as a journey, all leading toward the aim of exploring freedom in process and subject matter. In seeing art as a transformational tool, she hopes to inspire the freedom to create in others. She cultivates liberation for herself by exploring her imperfect process and relishing the explosive end result. Being from San Diego, she returned after studying art at UCSB and the Tasmania School of Art in Australia. Searching for the underground art scene in Southern California led her to curate multiple shows between 2003 -2005 with a crew of renegade female artists called GRRRRL power. Currently she shows at select exhibitions and focuses on illustrating T-shirt graphics for local design company Mad Engine, Urban Outfitters, Lost surf apparel, SubUrban Riot, and many more. Mentoring teen artists at local art center A.R.T.S,  A Reason to Survive constantly reminds her of the healing and transformational power of art.

Artist Statement: I view my life as a journey and for me, art serves as a way to document that journey. Sometimes I choose the path that I want to take and other times the path chooses me. Through my art I try to capture images that are revealed in the most unexpected locations. I find light and beauty in those places that are often forgotten and overlooked. I am particularly drawn to water, and the reflected images that lie on the surface. There is a powerful and mysterious quality that resides in a reflected image.

Artist Statement: My works are of life in the moment, preserving through the eye of the lens. Traveling back to a country I once called home this past December, Vietnam was ever more beautiful. The series of images represent part of the whole experience, going from South to North on a coastal journey. Seeing what was once a daily life tradition, now disappearing in the progress to keep up with the rest of the world, I am here to see and capture what is life.
